Q2 2020 Prevent personal injuries

The goal of the learning package is to
prevent personal injuries by:

  • Thinking hazards – always
  • Becoming even better at identifying hazards during work and to/from the work site
  • Taking good measures for identified hazards and involve each other in this work

For leaders: How to use the learning package

Click on the relevant target group below and read the guidelines before using the learning package in your team.

Trip 1 Task in field

Preparations

Set aside 20 minutes to brief your team and watch the introduction film “Prevent personal injuries”.

Open the case “Think hazards – always!”, on how to prevent personal injuries, and watch the film (approx. 6 min.).

Below the film, you will find a form to fill in as you perform the practical task. Remember to download and print the form before starting the learning package with your team.

After watching the film it is time to go out in the field. Where possible, put together a team with members from all disciplines.

Select two jobs on this trip where you want to put special focus on risk identification. Choose one routine job and one more complex/multi-disciplinary  job. Make sure to allocate sufficient time, so as to identify all hazards in the line of fire.

In the field

Walk the route to/from the work site. Remember that to/from the work site also includes to/from the coffee bar/office/storage facility/workshop etc.

Follow observation technique guidelines to find hazards/risks in the line of fire. Increase engagement by commenting out loud on the things you observe.

Spend extra time on the work site and involve the area technician and the safety delegate in identifying hazards.

After the task

Debrief the group to see if you have identified all possible hazards to/from and at the work site.

After the debrief, make sure you have made all the required notes in the form (see preparations) and deliver the risk identification report to local leadership on board, who will follow up on trip two.

Trip 2 Task for leaders and safety delegates

Start with the reflections gathered in trip one.

Leadership and CSD/SD on board give a debrief from trip one.

Gather and review the best risk assessments with corresponding measures.

Discuss results in a separate meeting where the leadership team, area technician and safety delegate are present.

Recognition: Let a member of the team/department that made the risk identification present the results.

Summarise with the team what you see in terms of changed behaviours. Define key measures for Q2 2020 that will contribute to avoiding personal injuries locally.

Part 1: Together we prevent personal injuries

In the meeting

Allow 30 minutes to complete part 1.

Watch the introduction film “Prevent personal injuries”.

Open the case “Together we prevent personal injuries” focusing on how we can work together to identify hazards all the way from design until the work is finished.

Watch the film and discuss the reflection questions. Fill in your answers in the form below the film.

  1. – Who do we depend on cooperating / communicating with to ensure safe execution in construction projects?
  2. – How can we ensure that hazards (such as safe evacuation) are identified and communicated to the right person(s)?

Agree on how you can follow-up the measures you have defined.

Part 2: Good safety inspections

In the meeting

Watch the introduction film “Prevent personal injuries”.

Open the case “Good safety inspections” focusing on how we prepare, perform and get involved on site.

Watch the film and discuss the reflection questions. Fill in your answers in the form below the film.

  1. – Why are inspections an important part of our safety work?
  2. – How would you perform an inspection in order to achieve the best possible effect on safety?
  3. – Which preparations should you make before an inspection?

Task in field

Perform inspections in the field, in small groups (max. 3-4 persons). One inspector will be observing the others’ inspections / involvements.

Find at least one positive observation, and start with this when summarizing with the inspected

After the inspection, the inspectors and inspected discuss:

  • – How did it feel to be inspected?
  • – What impression is the inspected left with?
  • – Were possible hazards identified and mitigated?
  • – What worked well and what can we  improve on?

Set personal goals for the number of inspections / involvements to perform on a regular basis.

Preparations

Set aside time to go through the package. Recommended completion time is 40 minutes.

You can go through the package in a separate meeting or include it in an HSE-meeting or any other planned meeting.

Familiarize yourself with the safety rules that apply to your office location.

Results and input from the meeting should be sent to the site manager and CSD for your office location with a request that this be processed in the AMU.

In the meeting

Watch the introduction film “Prevent personal injuries”.

Open the case “Safety in all we do!” about risks and hazards present in the office, and how the work we do can affect the safety of others.

Watch the film and discuss the reflection questions. Fill in your answers in the form below the film.

  1. – What hazards are present in our office?
  2. – Do our office rules address these hazards?
  3. – What will it take in order for us to become better at compliance with office rules?
  4. – How can we contribute to preventing personal injuries for others (offshore, sites, suppliers)?

Get a copy of your answers by entering your email on the last page of the form.
